Zineb

Zineb (also spelled Zineb, Zeneb) is the North African vocalization of the classical Arabic Zaynab (زَيْنَب). The name Zaynab is anciently attested in Arabian genealogies and Islamic history; its semantic field in Arabic includes references to a fragrant tree, a pleasing aroma, and by cultural extension 'a source of beauty' or 'father's ornament'. In the Maghreb the pronunciation and orthography shifted to Zineb/Zeneb, reflecting regional phonology and Amazigh‑Arabic bilingual environments. The variant is documented in civil registers, family genealogies, and literature from Morocco and adjacent regions. Although Zaynab as a root name is historically prominent within Islamic tradition—including several notable Sahabiyat—the Maghrebi form Zineb functions as a regional, culturally marked version prized for local identity.
