Zikrullah
While the exact compound appears in Sufi literature and hadith, the components are Quranic. The command for Dhikr appears in Surah Al-Ahzab 33:41: 'O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance.'
In Sufi tradition, Dhikr (remembrance) is the primary spiritual practice for attaining divine presence. Naming a child Zikrullah reflects the aspiration for the child to embody constant divine mindfulness and spiritual alertness.
It appears historically in Persian-speaking Sufi families, particularly in Afghanistan, Iran's Khorasan region, and South Asian Muslim communities with strong mystical traditions.
While traditionally masculine, some modern families use it unisex, though Dhikra or Zahra are more common feminine forms related to remembrance.
Traditionally associated with spiritual awareness, contemplative nature, mindfulness, and a deep connection to divine reality through the heart's remembrance.
